The College of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Virginia Tech is excited to welcome our newest Hokies. The virtual academic advising & course registration period is one of the most important parts of your transition to college. This is where you will meet one-on-one with your academic advisor in your major and obtain critical information for your success and where you’ll enroll in classes for the upcoming semester.

The information that follows details how virtual summer academic advising and course registration will occur, and what steps you need to take to prepare for and sign up for your virtual academic advising appointment.

Excited students walk through campus.

Between mid-June and late-July:

Information about your Academic Advising Appointment

On June 7, 2024 your academic advisor will contact you with information about how to schedule your virtual academic advising appointment. This will be sent to your Virginia Tech email address.

Advising appointments will take place over ZOOM sometime between June 12 and July 31, 2024 (exact dates will vary based on major). Sign up early and download the ZOOM app in advance of your appointment. You won’t be able to schedule your advising appointment prior to June 7.

Please be sure to have completed the virtual orientation modules, in addition to reviewing information in canvas about course registration and classes required for your major. Your advisor will expect you to have registered for classes prior to scheduling your individual virtual advising appointment. When you meet with your advisor, they will review your fall course schedule and answer any individual questions you may have, or help you make any necessary course schedule edits.

New Student Canvas Site

On June 7, 2024 you’ll receive an invitation to join a new student Canvas site for your major. Canvas is a learning management system that is used by your advisors and will be used by many of your professors.

You will be required to accept the invitation to join the Canvas site (sent to your VT email address) and then review modules related to how to register for classes, what classes to register for, and other important information about your major.  Should you have missed the email from your advisor on how to make a virtual appointment, this information will also be shared from within the canvas site.

It’s important you review this information before meeting with an academic advisor.

The Canvas page prior to course registration, so you have time to review this information before you begin adding classes.

FAQs

The earliest you can schedule an appointment with your academic advisor will be June 7, when your academic advisor will email you a link to schedule that appointment. We recommend you sign up early for an advising appointment. Appointments will occur over ZOOM, sometime between June 12 and July 31, 2024 (exact dates will vary based on major).

You can begin registering for classes on the morning of June 12. Register early because classes can fill up! Follow along to the instructions in Canvas to guide you on what classes to choose. The canvas page will be released a week before registration opens, so you’ll have time to review the instructions and required classes for your major.

You should pay careful attention to the details in canvas, and reference back to the welcome email you received. If you have course registration questions, email your academic advisor, who’s contact information will be posted in canvas, or contact Rob Jacks, Director of Academic Advising at rjacks@vt.edu. Please be patient in waiting for a response.

Likewise, you can save your questions for your individual academic advising appointment. During that appointment your advisor will review your fall course schedule with you, and your advisor can help you make any schedule edits at that time.
