Dean's Message
It’s a new academic year for the Hokies – and the first one for me as your new dean of the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD). I am excited to be in Blacksburg, leading in a space with a rich history of creative excellence, with faculty who excel in both teaching and research and students who are engaged and eager to make our world a more accessible, sustainable, and beautiful place.
It’s been heartwarming to receive such a wonderful welcome into the AAD community from faculty, staff, students, and alumni alike! The college is fortunate to have dedicated advocates who are committed to our continued recognition as a leader in architecture, arts, and design education, research, and outreach. If I’ve not yet had a chance to meet you, please make plans to join us at an upcoming regional college reception.
Our world is rapidly changing, and to ensure that our college stays positioned as a leader in design thinking and making as well as creative innovation, I have asked the college’s faculty to help re-envision how we work with students in both Blacksburg and at the Washington Alexandria Architecture Center. Virginia Tech aspires to be recognized as a top 100 global university and our college plays a critical role in that effort. Comprised of four schools, Architecture, Design, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts, the college is a community that pushes boundaries as we imagine, design, and create everything from music and performances to homes and films and we will not waiver from that commitment.
Ensuring that all students in our college have the opportunity to fully participate in studio projects, travel, and internship experiences without barriers, financial or otherwise, in order to reach their long-term goals is a priority for me and our college. We are here to help our students succeed so that when they conclude their time with us, they are prepared to make a lasting positive impact in their communities.
Thank you for your support of AAD as we continue to make a difference in ways both large and small throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and far beyond. I am honored to be your dean and look forward to the academic year ahead!
