Study architecture in historic Alexandria, Virginia

The Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center — or WAAC, as it is affectionately known across the college — is located only eight miles from Washington, D.C., and offers both undergraduate and graduate students a studio-based education rooted in real-world urban contexts.

The WAAC is a gateway to the classroom of the city. It’s the hub of a tightknit community of thinkers and change-makers where students don’t just study urban architecture and design — they live it.

Although the center serves now serves all Hokies, Virginia Tech’s presence in Switzerland was initiated by architecture students who traveled there to study in the 1980’s. As the program grew — and the need for affordable housing — the university purchased and renovated the Riva San Vitale as a hub for experiential learning and exploration. The Steger Center continues to be a cherished overseas study tradition nestled in the classroom of Europe. Students live and create together in an interdisciplinary learning environment that’s the perfect location for weekend excursions and field trips.
