Creativity that connects and serves

In the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design, outreach and engagement are central to our mission and rooted in Virginia Tech’s land-grant tradition. We believe in Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) and the power of the arts and design to strengthen communities, spark dialogue, and create a lasting impact.

As the university’s creative heart and an integral part of the arts scene in Southwest Virginia, we connect with people across campus, throughout the region, and beyond through performances, exhibitions, partnerships, and public programs. Whether you're a local neighbor, an alum, or a supporter of the arts, you’re part of our community.

Arts experiences made for—and with—the community

Our stages and programs bring people together as audiences and collaborators. From performances like Mozart’s Requiem that featured the Blacksburg Master Chorale to joyful traditions like TubaChristmas and summer music camps for young musicians, the college offers something for all ages and experience levels.

Whether you’re looking to perform, participate, or simply enjoy the show, we welcome you to be a part of the creative energy.

Design that gives back

DesignUp connects students with purpose-driven projects that make a difference. Its signature event, the annual Designathon, brings together graphic design professionals and undergraduate students for a full day of creative problem-solving to develop logos, brochures, websites, and more for local nonprofits.

It’s a hands-on opportunity for students to gain real client experience while using their skills to serve the community.

String Project offers unique opportunity for local students

Without the efforts of the music faculty and students who make the String Project possible, the chance to learn and master an instrument like the violin or cello would likely not be an option in Southwest Virginia.

The program pairs Virginia Tech students with children and teens in area elementary, middle, and high schools, providing music and music education majors with teaching experience and aspiring musicians with access to affordable lessons.

Designing with—and for—communities

The Community Design Assistance Center (CDAC) helps communities across Virginia imagine and plan for a better future. College faculty, staff, and students work side-by-side with towns, neighborhoods, schools, and nonprofits to design parks, trails, main streets, community centers, and more.

CDAC projects are shaped by listening and collaboration, ensuring that the voices of residents guide each step of the design process. For students, it’s a chance to apply their skills in real-world settings, while learning what it means to design with care and purpose. For communities, it’s a way to turn ideas into possibilities and possibilities into plans.
