The college invites applications for the inaugural position of Associate Dean of Research and Creative Scholarship. The associate dean will be integral to developing AAD’s diverse research areas. Faculty Opportunities

The Virginia Tech School of Design based in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design seeks applicants for adjunct faculty positions in the Industrial Design Program. The selected candidates will teach courses in the accredited undergraduate industrial design program (BS.IDS). The anticipated start date is immediate with flexibility to delay until January 2024 based on current courses needed in history of design and visual communication.

The Industrial Design program promotes theory and practice as equally critical components of an industrial design identity which emphasizes collaborative and project-based learning, as well as individual student development. Industrial Design is an award winning program with a continually evolving and developing curriculum which prepares our graduates to be leaders in the profession. The School of Visual Arts (SOVA) at Virginia Tech invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track faculty positions in Graphic Design, with a start date of August, 2024. The ideal hires will complement the current faculty within the Graphic Design program in the areas of expertise, research focus, and teaching qualifications. We seek applicants who have expertise that align with the future of graphic design, marked by a deep integration of technology, focusing on enhancing user experience in various digital realms, such as AR, VR, AI, motion, and web.

SOVA is housed within the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD) at Virginia Tech, a comprehensive land grant research university in Blacksburg, Virginia. SOVA has approximately 275 undergraduate majors within four areas (Graphic Design, Creative Technologies, Studio Art and Art History). The Graphic Design program currently has approximately 90 majors and has been included in GDUSA’s list of “Top 30 Graphic Design Schools'' for each of the last five years.

The Interior Design program at Virginia Tech has consistently been recognized as a top interior design program since the early 2000s. We invite applications to join our team as a tenure-track Assistant Professor effective August 2024. The program is part of the new School of Design, one of the four schools in the newly formed College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD). The School of Design includes undergraduate and graduate programs in industrial design, interior design, and landscape architecture and includes over 20 full-time faculty and staff. The Program of Interior Design currently has 9 full and part time faculty and roughly 160 undergraduate interior design majors.

The School of Design at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Collegiate Faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Industrial Design program. The position is effective August 2024 with an initial three-year appointment. Collegiate Faculty positions at Virginia Tech are nine-month, renewable, non-tenure-track lines with opportunity for promotion that contribute to the tripartite mission of the institution: teaching, research and service, with an emphasis on teaching and service.

The specific area of specialization for the Collegiate Faculty in Industrial Design is open, a successful candidate will teach a range of classes from undergraduate entry-level courses to upper-level courses covering the breadth of the program’s curriculum, depending on programmatic needs. Current topics of interest are history of design, visual communication, UX/UI; most courses can be categorized into theory, design competencies, professional practice, and studio based courses. Programmatic goals include a focus on environmental stewardship, health and wellness, technology and advanced manufacturing, equity, and community service. In this search we seek a colleague to help diversify perspectives on the design of products, systems, and services that will define our global future.

 Description

As part of an applied theatre initiative in the theatre program and a university-wide Destination Area investment, the School of Performing Arts and the Center for Communicating Science at Virginia Tech seek a colleague in Applied Theatre and Community Engagement (preferably with a focus on health outcomes). The successful candidate will teach both theatre courses and courses that employ applied theatre to develop capacities in a range of graduate students who are conducting research in scientific, medical, and technical disciplines, will develop curricula focused on arts-based approaches to transdisciplinary collaboration, and will work with Public Health colleagues to envision and implement public engagement studios. This will be a nine-month, academic year position with tenure home in the School of Performing Arts in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design.

The School of Design at Virginia Tech invites applications for a full-time, two-year instructor position in Industrial Design, effective January 2024. The successful candidates will have a Master’s degree in Industrial Design or related discipline and a proven ability to teach at a university. Duties of each position include teaching a 2/2 course load of core Industrial Design courses and elective courses. Current topics of interest are history of design, visual communication, UX/UI; most courses can be categorized into theory, design competencies, professional practice, and studio based courses. Individuals appointed as an instructor are focused on undergraduate education, with minimal or no expectation for development of an independent program of research or scholarship. Additional responsibilities may include advising students, developing or revising curricula or courses, and other instructional duties.

Staff Opportunities


The College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD) values curiosity and encourages inquiry and exploration through creative practice, research and scholarship. We look to foster an environment and create an infrastructure that allows our faculty to thrive in this space.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research & Creative Scholarship, the Pre-Award and Funding Support Specialist advises and aids faculty in securing external funding (e.g. grants, fellowships, sponsored programs, etc.) for creative scholarship, artistic expression, and innovation. The specialist will engage faculty and the university network of resources to develop and review proposals ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and requirements. Additionally, they will liaise with external organizations to facilitate faculty interactions related to funding programs and promote the impact of faculty research or creative scholarship.
